Each dot is an air molecule — sort of. A real cubic meter holds ~2.5 × 10²⁵ of them, and the count rarely differs from a standard day by more than a few percent, so the difference in dots is drawn ≈12× exaggerated to make it visible. Dot speed scales with temperature (that part is real physics: warmer molecules move faster, spread out, and leave fewer of them inside your wing's span and your cylinders' intake stroke) — density falls, and lift, thrust and horsepower fall with it. The trend chart is drag-to-scrub and drives the whole page: solid segments come from real observations, dashed segments from the Open-Meteo model interpolated hourly and corrected to the latest METAR. Density altitude peaks mid-afternoon and bottoms out around dawn — pick your takeoff accordingly.
